I posted this on SLN, I reckon there's something in what my idea - felt in Blackpool, Grange, etc. but not Coniston... why? Any thoughts?
The windows were rattling in my classroom about then, but I think that was my irritated shouting not the earthquake ;)
Seriously, didn't know about this until logged on last night - despite being much closer to Ulverston (where many of our kids come from) than other people who reported shaking. Haven't seen much detail yet, but I'm guessing that as we are in the hills, on the Lake District 'massif', it takes a lot more to shake the ground than round the coast at say Grange-over-Sands - between Grange and Ulverston there's lots of Recent superficial drift. It was the same with the Market Rasen EQ - people South of the Lake District felt it, but 15 miles round the coast, nothing. I reckon you can relate this to SF 1906 and Kobe 1995 in that a lot of damage was caused there due to the reclaimed bay areas underlain by unconsolidated sediment shaking more (though I doubt there was liquefaction in Grange!!)
Being in Preston I felt absolutely nothing of course but the first I heard/saw of it was on twitter! Quite different from Feb 27 last year when I was woken up by the bed shaking and my neighbour knocking on the door wondering whether the foundations of our semi-detached were collapsing!
Thanks for replying Mary - on the twitter thread for the EQ there were some accounts of feeling the EQ in Preston, believe it or not. PS glad your moodle book is getting critical acclaim on twitter - if my life ever settles down and I have time to consider development not just survival and job applications, I'll buy a copy...
The earthquake was heard by myself near Tarn Hows , but did not know what it was at the time,
spent a whole lesson on it today with pupils using internet , Evening Mail article and Westmorland Gaz. Pupils had to produce an A4 information sheet based on what, where ,why, how , when etc. Some good resources off BBc web site and even a seismograph reading !!!!!
