I think the whole process of writing up + publishing what you are doing and thinking about is the best CPD you will probably encounter. Free, measured by worthy contemporaries, soul bearing but a real idicator of your mettle. Education is about giving, the process does not devalue your position but enriches the recipient. There are plenty of lurkers who sit and grab what you produce open a 4 shared account or box.net and yu can see who is downloading, there are plenty of quiet, happy recipients. 53 downloads of Angels + Demons poster in 24hrs and only Little Miss has recognised my [minimal] efforts; and this is th notoriously slow weekend. Oh, I agree with everything you say Mark, I'm glad the internet age seems to be having a very positive effect on the whole human psyche re: sharing ideas, etc. - it's just that I have to confess that I'm just a little disappointed that more people haven't 'picked up and run' with this site - I understand: it's just another thing to think about in pressured, busy lives; people are shy of sharing resources in case they come across as thinking they are special or something; perhaps even people think the site is some sort of ego trip for me - but I'm still disappointed as I think there would be enormous value in a proper sharing community, especially in a place like Cumbria where it is easy to feel a little isolated, with many small, remote schools. If and when I move away I am hoping some energetic charismatic young teacher might feel the pull, and have the ideas, to make this site work. By the way, interested to read on SLN of your year-group nings, this is what I intend to set up in my new school if / when someone gives me a job...
Here's the lesson and associated bits and bobs (lesson PPt, card sort activity and extension reading - video on next reply in this thread).
'Spose people in West Cumbria at least should be doing SOMETHING on the local nuclear stuff - this is a general pros and cons of nuclear and locational factors for nuclear power stations - with a little bit on Dungeness at the end (I was teaching the lesson in Kent) - could easily be adjusted for your most local site, and expanded upon I would think - there's lots out there in the online local press etc. about especially the Braystones and Kirksanton sites ('extension reading sheet' has some e.g.s)
Chernobyl starter video attached (NB I think this is a good one to get students thinking about reliability / bias etc. - the video came from YouTube...) - if you want to query anything with this lesson or video (e.g. what I am getting at on some slides etc), please just ask...
